Marc Faber is a Swiss economist, businessman and investment analyst most famous for his Gloom Boom & Doom Report. He currently resides in Thailand.
Born in Zurich, Switzerland on February 28th, 1946, Dr. Faber studied economics at the University of Zurich and received a PhD in Economics at the age of 24. In 1970 he began working for White Weld & Company Limited in New York, Zurich and Hong Kong. In 1973 he settled in Hong Kong. In 1978 he became managing director of Drexel Burnham Lambert Limited in Hong Kong, a Wall Street investment banking firm, until the company collapsed due to involvement in illegal junk bond trading at the hands of Michael Milken, known today as The Junk Bond King.
After Drexel Birnham Lambert's bankruptcy, Dr. Faber founded Marc Faber Limited, an investment advising firm and fund manager concentrating on value assets based on alternative investment philosophies. Known in financial circles as "Dr. Doom", Marc Faber has made a name for himself as an astute investor and expert on making money by following contrarian trends. He is an eternal bear on the U.S. economy and predicts a slow descent of the dollar to the point of hyperinflation. His investment strategy generally goes against mainstream trends and, while most of his predictions are accurate, admits that market timing is nearly impossible to predict, especially in a world rife with government intervention in the economy and markets. He is particularly critical of US economic policy, which he blames for causing high unemployment, job outsourcing, global trade imbalances and devaluatory pressure on fiat currencies through debt accumulation.
Dr. Faber's monthly newsletter The Gloom Boom & Doom Report has attained cult status due to its accurate and insightful commentaries and predictions. He is a sought-after speaker and has participated in numerous seminars worldwide. He is a frequent contributor in financial media and appears on many financial shows on the mainstream TV networks. He is well known for his pessimism and witty one-liners during his interviews.
As an author, Dr. Faber has penned many books, the most popular being Tomorrow's Gold: Asia's Age of Discovery, published in 2002.
